35 Burwood Road

Objective

To provide headquarters for a prominent sportswear distributor already based in Burwood. The site was owned by the client. It was small and on the edge of the main business centre of Burwood, so the signature building design was intended to present a unique identity to compensate for its less than ideal position.

  • Striking ultra-modern building envelope
  • Innovative environmental concepts including mediating double skin curtain wall system
  • Top floor boardroom surrounded by indoor garden
  • Side core design for efficient use of a small site

Caltex Offices

Objective

Caltex undertook a rationalisation of their site at Kurnell which involved the relocation and consolidation of the administration functions.

Outcome

  • Identification of a suitable site on which to develop a new administration building
  • Preparation of a design which both met the needs of Caltex and provided additional lettable space
  • Increased safety for administrative staff through the design and siting of the building

Streets Ice-Cream Expansion

Objective

Unilever Australia required a major expansion of their existing ice-cream production facilities in Sydney, in order to increase and improve output levels and improving work flow practices. The project delivery method included a reduced design and build program to limit the impact on current production output.

Outcome

  • Design and Construction procurement with Hooker Cockram
  • Increasing production capacity without disruption during construction through innovative construction methodology and sequencing
  • Integration of complex services reticulation and production processing systems

Norton Street Restaurant

Objective

Norton Street is noted for its cafes and restaurants. The strength of the idea was establishing a single dining level while retaining the garden setting. The project is essentially an infill to the existing active streetscape which resolved all of the complex urban and political issues and was approved with no objections.

  • Achieving approvals in a difficult context of new buildings adjacent to historic buildings
  • Retaining garden setting to streetscape
  • Linking the Restaurant and the Garden
  • Gaining new open space for Norton Street

Southern Cross College

Objective

Formulate a design to address the relocation of Southern Cross College to the former Olympic site at Homebush Bay. On a restricted site, provide the teaching, commercial and social facilities together with the residential accommodation needs of the College in a single multi-level building.

Outcome

  • Design for a ‘vertical’ college within the constraints of the SOPA Guidelines
  • A sustainable building design with a range of cutting edge environmental initiatives
  • Active street level uses including college reception, restaurant and lecture hall foyer
  • Upper level multi-purpose learning spaces, library and administration
  • Top of building dedicated to student residences

C3A Macquarie University

Objective

Introduction of new active learning spaces and consolidated staff facilities through the refurbishment of the Division of Psychology building.

  • New technology based learning environments
  • Address fundamental building code of Australia non compliances
  • Flexible formal and informal spaces for students to congregate and meet

E7B Geochemical Laboratory

Objective

A new multi-purpose geochemical laboratory to be used by a number of stakeholders within Macquarie University, including Australian Centre for Astrobiology, Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences, and the Graduate School of the Environment.

Outcome

  • Flexibility through modular furniture system, which enables changes in work practices to accommodate multiply stakeholders
  • Services reticulation though fully open and accessible spines for maximum flexibility

Knox Grammar School Great Hall + Swim Centre

Objective

To provide a Great Hall that is imbued with a recognition of Knox history and a sense of occasion for special events attracting up to 2000 people, while simultaneously meeting the daily requirements of the school for a sports facilities.

Outcome

  • Grand entry foyer with ceremonial stairs addressing the boulevard
  • Hall with capacity to seat up to 2300 people on main floor and mezzanine
  • Sports facilities and an Aquatic Centre
  • Rationalised parking

NBCS Multi-Purpose Hall

Objective

As part of the Federal Government’s BER initiative, this small private school in Sydney’s northern suburbs identified the need for a multi-purpose hall. Jones Sonter was engaged to design a hall on a limited budget which offered potential for extension in the future.

Outcome

  • A building with a distinctive identity and strong presence responding to its location amongst the school playing fields
  • An entry configuration which doubles as an outdoor tiered assembly space
  • Necessity for piled footings used as an opportunity to elevate the hall for minimum additional cost, thus providing space for future expansion at ground level.

Shalala on Bay

Objective

Jones Sonter won an invited competition by presenting a design approach that preserved an historic rock face and eliminated excavation for parking, with the objective of reducing construction time and utilising the existing slope of the rear lane for multi-level car access.

Outcome

  • 10 storey building, 28 apartments of which 3 are penthouses
  • Commercial space over two levels addressing Bay Street
  • Cafe/Restaurant addressing the rock face character
  • 3 level parking podium with no ramping required
  • Efficient building footprint with no costly basement parking
